So it would seem that the win2000 command line does have pipes, and almost GPM-style cut and paste. Why isn't it as popular as the linux one?

Tab completion and batch file support? Is that all it's lacking?

The Windows XP command line has pipes.

The Windows 2000 CLI is actually posix compliant, according to Microsoft. XP isn't, although you can get something called the Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications which will supposedly return it to its shakily posix-compliant predecessor's state.

Something to think about.

MSDOS had pipes but about their only use was in commands like "type file.txt | more" because there were no programs worth piping into. I don't know about Windows 2000 but would guess that it too lacks some of the useful commands you get with Unix, such as grep.

MSDOS also had batch files.

when I said batch file support was lacking, I meant that it's cumbersome compared to shell scripts.
