Best bug report in the world. Discuss.

Do you even have the macromedia flash plugin installed?

You know how wonderful I am at informative bug reports.

Erm...I'm not sure, to be completely honest. How do I check, in either Firefox or Konq? It doesn't appear under Tools>Extensions in Firefox. I have a vague memory of trying to install it and failing, but that may have been on SuSE.

Yup, Firefox doesn't have it, tried to install and it failed, and offered me an option to "Manual install", which I haven't tried yet.

*quiet sigh*

Rule number 1 of software installation: Your package manager will handle *everything* you install. Whenever you try to install anything that's not from a signed repository, you run the risk of getting infected(why do you think there are so many windows spyware programs floating about? :P).

Okay, so maybe SuSE was counter-productive as a first distro, given that its package manager is a wee bit poo, but you may have noticed that one of the licenses you accepted when installing SuSE was the macromedia flash one. I don't remember accepting that for Kubuntu, so I'm gonna assume that you don't have it installed.

Don't worry: you'll get there eventually.

Also, check that you have sound from flash (ask Rob whether he has sound from flash) because I have managed to screw that one so it doesn't work anymore on my Gentoo box. Might be quite nice if I could have a look at your configs so I can get it working again.

I have flash and sound, using the multiverse flashplugin-nonfree. There appears to be some GPL ones instead, but I have that one, it works so I don't really care. So my recommendation is apt-get install that or one of the GPL ones if you prefer.

Okay, so where do I get flash from? The add/remove programs thing, or is it a command line thing?

*tries apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree*
*finds that it now works in firefox, though not in konq*

The Adept GUI is just another way of doing the same thing as the command line commands, so you can use either, and due to my inexperience with the command line, I tend to vary between both depending on what I am doing.

Haven't a clue how to get it to work in Konq, as I can't think of what else I would have installed/changed to get it working. I suppose you could try the GPL version instead, but I'm guessing it will be worse than the official plugin in some way, since otherwise the nonfree option wouldn't have been provided. You can see flash stuff now, so it might be worth just sticking with the Switch to Firefox if you need it method.

This is where I step in, being a konq user.

That bit of config is done in konq in configure plugins. Try rescanning (this happens on KDE start automatically if I remember correctly, which will be why Rob won't remember how he did it)

If you hadn't returned to LJ until about an hour later, there would have been a post stating exactly what you just said, as I was impatient and did actually rescan. There is a check box for the purpose of stating if you want it to check on startup, which by default is set to yes.

It's not your job to try to work out how to do things you haven't even done yourself, especially when you're not asked, so in future I really wouldn't bother researching and posting such things unless it's personally interesting to a project that you know you need to do yourself anyway (and even then, most of the time it's easier to simply say "I don't know, but please tell me when you find out" (*realises that he did exactly that in his first reply*) )

There will be plenty of people out there (like myself in this case) who will have actually encountered the problem and will be able to spit the answer out off the top of their heads.
